Bijaksana Meniru Cara Hidup Jemaat Pertama: Melihat Kemiskinan sebagai Ekses dari Cara Hidup Jemaat dalam Kisah Para Rasul 2:41-47

Falentina Br. Sembiring, Pelita Hati Surbakti

Abstract

According to the Acts of the Apostles, the first Christian congregation in Jerusalem was well-liked by many people and their numbers grew rapidly. For this reason, several previous studies have identified this church as the ideal church. With this identification, several church leaders who desire church growth often take the example of this first church as an ideal model to emulate. Through this paper, we would like to provide a new perspective that the way of life practiced by the first church cannot necessarily be practiced just like that. This is partly because, even from the beginning, selling property and distributing it to the poor congregation has led to the excesses of poverty that have worsened in the future. With a social-scientific analysis approach to Acts 2:41-47, we want to show the excesses of the way of life of the earliest church that sold property and distributed it. As a result, at least 20 years later the worsening poverty of the church as found in 2 Corinthians 8-9 was finally experienced by the earliest church in Jerusalem. Therefore, no matter how good, this “ideal church” way of life needs to be addressed critically, wisely, and contextually. This kind of attitude needs to be possessed by every church leader who wants to emulate it.
